Harmony of Tradition and Modernity — A Wholly New Tatami STUDIO THE BLUE BOY's Tatami Rug is crafted from 100% natural Igusa (rush grass), reinterpreting traditional tatami with a contemporary sensibility to create an entirely new form. Moving beyond the conventional rectangular design, the Tatami Rug features wavy curves and a circular motif—STUDIO THE BLUE BOY’s signature Wavy Gradient Rug. Traditionally, weaving Igusa into curved shapes for the tatami-doko (the inner layer of tatami) was considered impossible. However, in collaboration with Ikehiko Corporation, a long-established tatami manufacturer in Fukuoka since 1886, we achieved this distinctive design by integrating unconventional woodworking techniques not typically associated with tatami-making. In Okawa City, Fukuoka—renowned as Japan's premier furniture production hub—natural Igusa is meticulously crafted into its unique wavy form on the tatami-doko. Each blade is then carefully hand-dyed by artisans, resulting in a mesmerizing gradation.
伝統と現代が調和する、全く新しい“畳” STUDIO THE BLUE BOYの『Wavy Gradient Tatami（ウェービー・グラディエント・タタミ）』は、自然素材であるイグサを100％使用し、現代の感性で再解釈した全く新しい形状の畳です。従来のシンプルな四角形畳とは異なり、ウェービーな曲線と円を組み合わせたSTUDIO THE BLUE BOYのシグネチャーデザイン『Wavy Gradient Rug』を畳としてデザインしました。 これまで、イグサを畳の芯材である畳床に曲線状に織り込むことは不可能とされていました。そのため、1886年創業の福岡県の老舗畳メーカー、イケヒコ・コーポレーションの協力の元、特殊な形状に対応するため、通常の畳製作工程にはない木工技術を取り入れています。日本一の家具産地である福岡県大川市で、この独特の形を加工し、天然イグサを畳床に曲線状に形成。さらに、イグサを職人の手で一本一本丁寧に染め上げることで、美しいグラデーションに仕上げました。
Igusa is believed to have been introduced to Japan from China over 1,400 years ago. In Japan, it evolved into an ideal flooring material, valued for its natural breathability, which offers humidity control and odor elimination, making it perfect for all seasons and the Japanese climate. イグサは1400年以上前に中国から日本に伝来したと言われています。天然イグサが絶えず呼吸し続けることで、調湿作用や消臭効果を発揮し、四季折々の日本の気候にも適した床材として、日本独自の進化を遂げてきました。しかし1400年以上、形はほとんど変わっていません。その変わらなかったデザインに、STUDIO THE BLUE BOYが新たな命を吹き込みます。

Description
Using high-quality, dyed igusa grass sourced from Kyushu, the fabric is woven with precision on a jacquard loom. Each piece is carefully crafted by layering the igusa fabric, core material, and backing, one by one.
着色した九州産の高品質のイ草を、ジャガード織機にて織り上げ い草生地・中材・裏地を1枚1枚丁寧に貼り合わせて作成しました。

Care instructions
Gently wipe the entire surface with a dry cloth to remove any “urushitsuchi” (lacquer soil) or dye before use. Clean carefully along the weave using a vacuum cleaner or broom. Delivery Timeframe 4 - 5 weeks for delivery from your date of order.
自然素材を使用しているため、形状のばらつきやサイズが表示と多少異なるなど、個体差がございます。 ①ご使用の前に乾拭き 表面全体を乾拭きし、「漆土」や「染料」を落としてご使用ください。 ②適度に換気を 出来るだけ乾燥したお部屋でご使用いただき、天気の良い日にはお部屋の換気をしご使用ください。 ③お掃除 織り目に沿って、掃除機や箒を使って丁寧に清掃してください。 ④水をこぼした場合 ティッシュペーパーなどで水分を吸い取ってください。※強く拭き取ると色むらになりますのでご注意ください。 ⑤い草が切れて飛び出した場合 根本からカットし、指で馴染ませると それ以上ほつれることがなくお使いいただくことができます。

Each tatami piece will be individually wrapped with cushioning material and delivered in a single cardboard box.
